News and Announcements

Province of Ontario moves to modified Stage Two, pausing all indoor sports until January 26
JANUARY 3, 2022
COVID19
The Government of Ontario announced today new temporary restrictions as the province moves to a modified Stage Two of the Roadmap to Reopen.

*The time-limited Public Health measures include the pause of indoor sports which are not permitted for a period of at least 21 days beginning on January 5, 2022 at 12:01am. These dates are subject to trends in public health and other health system indicators. As a result, Greater Toronto Hockey League organizations, teams, and players at all levels (House League, Select, ‘A,’ ‘AA,’ and ‘AAA’) cannot participate in any indoor activities. Indoor sports facilities, as with the pause of indoor sports, are closed up to and including at least January 26. *

Due to the temporary restrictions, the GTHL Top Prospects Game powered by Under Armour, scheduled to take place on January 13, 2022, will be postponed. The new date for the event will be announced when the time-limited measures are to be lifted.

The GTHL Board of Directors will continue to work with local Public Health agencies, municipalities, and facility operators in order to return to hockey as safely as possible once the restrictions are lifted.

On December 31, the GTHL announced that effective January 2 up to and including January 12, all on-ice activities were to be paused due to Public Health advice and uncertainty created around changing regulations. This pause will remain in place until at least January 12.

The GTHL continues to have every intention of completing its regular season schedule following the lifting of provincial restrictions. The League will be working over the coming weeks to coordinate how the complete regular season may be accomplished.

Among the restrictions announced, a provision that businesses must operate remotely where possible was included. As a result, the GTHL Office will also be closed at the end of the business day on Tuesday, January 4. All staff will be working remotely until this restriction is lifted.

The GTHL recognizes the many ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to appreciate the understanding, support, and cooperation displayed by League Members and membership.

Remaining active while safely supporting local communities is encouraged during these difficult times. Regular physical activity, volunteering, and acts of kindness are proven to improve mental health in people of all ages. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GTHL announces pause until January 12
The Greater Toronto Hockey League announced today that effective January 2 up to and including January 12, hockey activities at all levels (House League, Select, ‘A,’ ‘AA,’ and ‘AAA’), including games, practices, and tournaments, will be paused due to Public Health advice and uncertainty created around changing regulations. The pause will allow the GTHL Board of Directors to consider then-current data, regulations, information, and recommendations.

On December 30, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore announced changes to the province’s isolation and testing requirements, and that schools would be reopening on January 5. The province of Ontario has also paused high intensity, high contact sports in schools and it has not been communicated as to whether youth community sport is able to resume safely. The specific regulations governing these changes have not yet been released.

The local public health units (Peel, Toronto, and York) have not had the opportunity to issue specific guidelines as to how these changes effect hockey programming within each health unit.

Prior to Thursday’s announcement by Dr. Moore, the City of Toronto had limited dressing room capacities to 50 per cent, and was requiring athletes to wear masks during participation.

This pause will provide the GTHL the opportunity to become clearly and appropriately informed on Public Health and provincial restrictions, while making the most educated decision for all participants.

The GTHL has every intention to complete the regular season schedule following the temporary pause until January 12.

The GTHL Members have worked diligently to ensure the safest possible experience for participants. The GTHL continues to have full confidence in the Game Plan 2.0. It has helped the GTHL and its members maintain a safe environment for all teams, players, families, and volunteers. The Game Plan 2.0 and the diligent effort made throughout the GTHL has allowed close to 2700 league games and thousands of House League and Select games to be played safely and successfully since the start of the 2021-22 season on November 1.
